mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 7, 2011 Issue MN-CW-31-11 Agricultural Summary Despite severe weather and heavy downpours in northern and central areas on Monday, dry conditions and warm temperatures prevailed for the remainder of the week, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. For the week ending August 7, variable conditions across the state continued. Some southern areas reported the need for rain, while northwestern and central areas remained wet with some crop damage from heavy winds, standing water, and disease reported. Producers continued to monitor and spray soybeans for aphids. Statewide, 5.0 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 71 percent adequate and 24 percent surplus. The statewide average temperature was 3.6 degrees above normal for the week. Small grain development continued to catch up to the average pace, but precipitation limited harvest progress. Oats harvested advanced 18 percentage points to 23 percent complete. Spring wheat was 6 percent harvested, compared to 27 percent for the five-year average. Barley was 7 percent harvested, compared to 40 percent average. Corn was 40 percent in the milk stage, compared to 52 percent average, and 8 percent in the dough stage, compared to 14 percent average. Soybeans were 88 percent blooming, compared to 94 percent average, and 48 percent setting pods, compared to 67 percent average. Crop conditions generally remained unchanged from the previous week: 55 percent of corn was rated good and 19 percent was rated excellent, while 52 percent of soybeans were rated good and 18 percent were rated excellent. Range and pasture was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 22 percent excellent. Wet conditions have made haying difficult in some areas.
