mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 21, 2011 Issue MN-CW-33-11 Agricultural Summary Limited rain and average temperatures provided suitable conditions for producers to harvest small grains, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of August 21, spring wheat and barley producers harvested 54 percent of the state's crop, an increase of 33 percentage points from the previous reporting period. Oats were 77 percent harvested, a 26 point increase from the previous reporting period. Other harvest activity included potatoes at 12 percent complete, canola at 19 percent complete, and sweet corn at 43 percent complete. The corn silage harvest was underway at 1 percent compared to 5 percent for the five-year average. Corn development continued to gain on the five-year average. Eighty-nine percent of corn was in the milk stage, compared to 90 percent average, while 53 percent of corn was in the dough stage, compared to 57 percent average. Twelve percent of corn was in the dent stage, compared to 23 percent average. Corn condition ratings declined slightly this past week to 53 percent good and 17 percent excellent, compared to 58 percent good and 17 percent excellent during the previous week. Ninety-seven percent of soybeans were blooming, compared to 99 percent average, and 85 percent were setting pods, compared to 94 percent average. Soybean condition ratings fell slightly this past week to 53 percent good and 15 percent excellent, compared to 53 percent good and 20 percent excellent during the previous week. Statewide, 5.8 days were rated suitable for fieldwork for the second consecutive week. Surplus topsoil moisture supplies fell to 11 percent, the lowest rating of the season. Reporters in southern areas have noted a prolonged lack of rain. Producers continued to scout and spray for soybean aphids when necessary.
