mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending August 28, 2011 Issue MN-CW-34-11 Agricultural Summary Another week of above average temperatures and limited rain advanced crop maturity and allowed producers to make rapid harvest progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. However, precipitation shortfalls in the southern third of the state continued. As of August 28, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 7 percent very short, 22 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus, a decline from the previous week. Statewide, 6.2 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. The small grain harvest continued rapidly this past week. Spring wheat was 77 percent harvested, surpassing the five-year average pace of 76 percent. Oats were 90 percent harvested, compared to 91 percent average, while barley was 76 percent harvested, compared to 83 percent average. The canola harvest advanced 31 percentage points from the previous week to 50 percent complete, compared to 55 percent average. Other harvest activities included potatoes at 14 percent, sweet corn at 57 percent, and corn cut for silage at 5 percent. Ninety-eight percent of corn was in the milk stage, compared to 97 percent average, while 82 percent of corn was in the dough stage, compared to 78 percent average. Thirty-six percent of corn was in the dent stage, compared to 47 percent average. Corn condition ratings were 24 percent fair and 51 percent good, a slight decrease from the previous week. Ninety-four percent of soybeans were setting pods, compared to 98 percent average. Two percent of soybeans were turning yellow, compared to 16 percent average. Soybean condition ratings fell slightly and were rated 26 percent fair and 50 percent good. Range and pasture condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 13 percent excellent, a slight decline from the previous week.
