mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending September 4, 2011 Issue MN-CW-35-11 Agricultural Summary As of September 4, 10 percent of the state's soybeans reached the turning yellow stage of development, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. This compared to 41 percent turning yellow last year and 42 percent for the five-year average. Soybean condition ratings were 28 percent fair and 49 percent good, a slight decline from the previous week. Average temperatures were 3.4 degrees above normal this past week and continued a pattern of above average temperatures and below average precipitation for several consecutive weeks. Precipitation ranged from .89 inch in southeastern areas to .27 inch in west central areas. Some reporters noted that crops are beginning to show signs of stress from lack of moisture. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 7 percent very short, 23 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus, a slight decline from the previous week. Statewide, 5.6 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. The small grain harvest neared completion. Ninety percent of spring wheat was harvested compared to 87 percent average. Ninety-six percent of oats were harvested, equal to average pace, while ninety four percent of barley was harvested, compared to 91 percent average. Other harvest activities included sweet corn at 71 percent complete, potatoes at 20 percent complete, and canola at 75 percent complete. Corn progress continued to catch up to average pace. Ninety-four percent of corn was in the dough stage, compared to 90 percent average, while 65 percent of corn was in the dent stage, compared to 66 percent average. Four percent of corn reached the mature stage, compared to 8 percent average. Corn condition was rated 26 percent fair and 48 percent good, a slight decline from the previous week. Corn harvested for silage was 16 percent complete, compared to 32 percent last year and 25 percent average.
