mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending April 15, 2012 Issue MN-CW-15-12 Agricultural Summary Planting continued this past week amid cooler temperatures that settled across the region, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. For the week ending April 15, temperatures fell well below freezing across several areas of the state for the first time since early March. Morning lows were reported in the teens and twenties. Active weather moved across the state over the weekend and included thunderstorms, strong winds, snow, and reported tornadoes in localized areas. Average rainfall amounts ranged from .41 inch in northwest areas to 1.72 inches in northeast areas. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 14 percent very short, 34 percent short, 49 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 17 percent very short, 48 percent short, 34 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Statewide, 5.0 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Spring wheat planting was 56 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 6 percent for the five-year average. Eight percent of the state's spring wheat was emerged. Oats planted were 77 percent complete, compared to 3 percent last year and 14 percent average. Nineteen percent of the state's oats were emerged. Barley planting was 35 percent complete, compared to 1 percent last year and 7 percent average. Eight percent of the state's barley was emerged. Land prepared for corn was 27 percent complete, and 7 percent of corn was planted, compared to 0 percent last year and 2 percent average. Land prepared for soybeans was 8 percent complete. Sugarbeet planting was underway at 24 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 2 percent average. Green pea planting was 19 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 2 percent average. Potato planting was 24 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 4 percent average.
