mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending April 22, 2012 Issue MN-CW-16-12 Agricultural Summary Above average precipitation was reported across the state, improving soil moisture supplies, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. For the week ending April 22, average rainfall amounts varied from 0.76 inch in northeastern areas to 1.85 inches in west central areas. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 4 percent very short, 21 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus, compared to 14 percent very short, 34 percent short, 49 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus the previous week. Statewide, 2.9 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Spring wheat planting advanced to 84 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 17 percent for the five-year average. Twenty percent of the state's spring wheat was emerged. Barley planting was 52 percent complete, compared to 1 percent last year and 17 percent average. Fourteen percent of the state's barley was emerged. Oats planted were 81 percent complete, compared to 4 percent last year and 26 percent average. Thirty-six percent of the state's oats were emerged. In the first condition ratings of the season, oats were rated 2 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 71 percent good and 3 percent excellent. Land prepared for corn was 36 percent complete, and 11 percent of corn was planted, compared to 0 percent last year and 12 percent average. Land prepared for soybeans was 13 percent complete. Sugarbeet planting was 45 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 13 percent average. Green pea planting was 44 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 12 percent average. Potato planting was 41 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 14 percent average. Canola planting was 9 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 7 percent average. Pasture conditions were rated 11 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 47 percent good and 4 percent excellent.
