mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending April 29, 2012 Issue MN-CW-17-12 Agricultural Summary Farmers planted several acres this past week, despite scattered precipitation across the state, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. For the week ending April 29, corn planting advanced 37 percentage points from the previous week to 48 percent complete, compared to 1 percent last year and 31 percent for the five-year average. Soybean planting was underway with 4 percent complete, compared to 0 percent last year and 4 percent average. Spring wheat planting neared completion with 93 percent compared to 28 percent average. Potato planting was 63 percent complete compared to 27 percent average. Sugarbeet planting advanced to 93 percent planted, 48 points ahead of the previous week, and 60 points ahead of average. Precipitation amounts were below normal across the state. Minimal precipitation was reported in northwestern areas, while an average 0.52 inch was reported in southwestern areas. Statewide, 4.4 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 17 percent short, 77 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus, compared to 4 percent very short, 21 percent short, 69 percent adequate and 6 percent surplus the previous week. Spring wheat condition was rated 5 percent fair, 75 percent good and 20 percent excellent. Oats condition were rated 1 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 8 percent excellent.
