mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 6, 2012 Issue MN-CW-18-12 Agricultural Summary Spring rain and thunderstorms moved across the state this past week, slowing fieldwork in some areas, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of May 6th, topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 71 percent adequate and 18 percent surplus, compared with 3 percent very short, 17 percent short, 77 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus the previous week. Precipitation amounts varied from light rainfall in the northwest portion of the state, up to 5.84 inches in southwestern areas. Statewide, 3.4 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Corn planting was 73 percent complete, compared to 20 percent last year and 53 percent for the five-year average. Twelve percent of corn was emerged. Land prepared for soybeans was 39 percent complete. Nineteen percent of soybeans were planted, compared to 4 percent planted last year and 13 percent average. Spring wheat emergence advanced 20 percentage points from the previous week to 64 percent emerged, compared to 1 percent last year and 20 percent average. Oats and barley continued ahead of their averages and were 74 and 60 percent emerged, respectively. Spring wheat condition was rated 94 percent good to excellent, while oats and barley conditions were rated 76 and 90 percent good to excellent, respectively. Other planting activities continued ahead of average. Sugarbeet planting was nearly complete at 98 percent compared to 53 percent average. Potato planting was 83 percent complete compared to 49 percent average. Canola planting advanced to 70 percent planted, 42 points ahead of the previous week and 47 points ahead of average.
