mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 13, 2012 Issue MN-CW-19-12 Agricultural Summary Several days of warm, dry conditions this past week allowed producers to continue planting progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. For the week ending May 13, below average precipitation was recorded at most reporting stations, with rains still needed in the northwestern part of the state. In southern areas, heavy rains the previous week improved topsoil moisture supplies, but kept producers out of the fields early this week. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 77 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. Statewide, 4.5 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Corn planting advanced 15 percentage points to 88 percent planted with 45 percent of the crop emerged. Soybeans were 44 percent planted, compared to 7 percent last year and 29 percent for the five year average. Three percent of soybeans were emerged. Ninety-five percent of spring wheat and 89 percent of barley was emerged with 5 and 6 percent jointed, respectively. Oats were 85 percent emerged with 10 percent jointed. The small grains were rated in primarily good to excellent condition. Planting of canola, potatoes, sunflowers and dry beans remained ahead of average. Sugarbeet condition was rated 5 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 65 percent good and 4 percent excellent. Pasture condition was rated 3 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 11 percent excellent, an improvement from the previous week. Six percent of first cutting alfalfa was harvested, ahead of average.
