mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 20, 2012 Issue MN-CW-20-12 Agricultural Summary Warm weather throughout the week allowed producers to make significant planting progress, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of May 20, soybean planting advanced to 81 percent complete, compared to 30 percent last year and 56 percent for the five-year average. Other crops nearing planting completion included canola and potatoes at 99 and 94 percent, respectively. Statewide, 6.2 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Dry conditions persisted in most areas of the state, despite scattered showers over the weekend. Statewide average precipitation was 0.6 inch, less than normal in most areas. Topsoil moisture supplies decreased from the previous week and were rated 2 percent very short, 17 percent short, 76 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus. In the first corn condition ratings of the year, the crop was rated 2 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 71 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Corn was 76 percent emerged, ahead of 17 percent last year and 46 percent average. Twenty-six percent of the soybean crop was emerged. Fifteen percent of spring wheat and 16 percent of barley were jointed. Oats were 33 percent jointed and 2 percent were headed. Condition ratings for all three small grains were mostly fair to excellent. First cutting alfalfa advanced to 26 percent complete, ahead of 0 percent last year and 3 percent average. Alfalfa condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 63 percent good and 9 percent excellent. Range and pasture condition was rated 5 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 63 percent good and 10 percent excellent.
