mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending May 27, 2012 Issue MN-CW-21-12 Agricultural Summary Wet weather moved across the majority of the state this past week, bringing rainfall to most reporting stations and limiting fieldwork, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. As of May 27, rain in northwestern areas was welcomed, while the rainfall in southwestern areas saturated many fields. Rainfall amounts ranged from nearly a half inch in Canby, to 5.59 inches reported in Aitkin. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 9 percent short, 68 percent adequate and 21 percent surplus across the state, an increase from the previous week. Statewide, 3.4 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Corn was 94 percent emerged with an average height of 4 inches. Corn condition was rated 2 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 67 percent good and 17 percent excellent. Soybeans planted advanced to 94 percent and 41 percent emerged, both ahead of last year and average. Forty-seven percent of spring wheat and 32 percent of barley was jointed. Spring wheat and barley were both 1 percent headed. Fifty-one percent of oats was jointed with 4 percent headed. Small grain condition ratings were mostly fair to excellent, relatively unchanged from last week. Progress for other crops continued ahead of average. Dry beans planted advanced to 79 percent complete, compared to 36 percent last year and 58 percent average. Thirty-one percent of dry beans were emerged. Sunflowers were 94 percent planted, compared to 39 percent last year and 65 percent average. Sweet corn planting was 54 percent complete, ahead of last year and average. The first cutting of alfalfa advanced to 40 percent complete, compared to 1 percent last year and 12 percent average. Alfalfa condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 63 percent good and 10 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 57 percent good and 14 percent excellent.
