mn-crop-weather State Minnesota Weekly Crop-Weather Week Ending Date Week Ending July 1, 2012 Issue MN-CW-26-12 Agricultural Summary Hot, dry weather prevailed over most of Minnesota this past week, according to the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office. Statewide temperatures averaged 4 degrees above normal, and limited rain fell in localized areas. The greatest weekly precipitation total was 0.74 inches recorded in Pipestone. As of July 1, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 78 percent adequate to surplus, down from 94 percent a week earlier. Statewide, there were 6.3 days rated suitable for fieldwork, up from 3.6 days the previous week. Five percent of corn was silking, compared to 0 percent last year, and 1 percent for the five-year average. Eighty-two percent of the corn crop was rated in good to excellent condition, compared to 83 percent last week. Twenty-six percent of soybeans were blooming, compared to 1 percent last year, and 6 percent average. Soybeans were rated 86 percent in fair to good condition. Small grain development continued ahead of average, with all three small grains 98 percent headed. Spring wheat was 16 percent turning ripe, compared to 0 percent last year and 1 percent average. Barley was 18 percent turning ripe, compared to 0 percent last year and 2 percent average. One percent of barley was harvested. Oats were 29 percent turning ripe, compared to 0 percent last year and 6 percent average. Three percent of oats were harvested. The first cutting of alfalfa was nearly complete at 99 percent, and alfalfa condition was rated 83 percent fair to good. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.
