December milk output was revised to 750 million pounds. Minnesota’s production per cow averaged 1,630 pounds in January 2009, up 20 pounds from last January. The revised December rate was 1,605 pounds per cow. The average number of milk cows on farms in Minnesota during January 2009 was 468,000 head, up 1,000 from the December number, but up 5,000 from one year ago. JANUARY MILK PRODUCTION UP 1.0 PERCENT IN MAJOR STATES Milk production during January 2009 totaled 14.9 billion pounds, up 1.0 percent from January 2008 in the 23 major States. December’s revised production was at 14.7 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from December 2007. The December revision represented an increase of 44 million pounds from last month’s preliminary estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,746 pounds for January, up 5 pounds from January 2008. The number of milk cows in the 23 major States was 8.51 million head, 58,000 head more than January 2008, but 12,000 head less than December 2008.
