               MINNESOTA’S APRIL MILK OUTPUT UP 2.9 PERCENT

April 2009 milk production totaled 753 million pounds in Minnesota, up 2.9
percent from the 732 million pounds produced in April 2008, according to
the USDA, NASS, Minnesota Field Office.  March milk output was revised to
768 million pounds.

Minnesota’s production per cow averaged 1,610 pounds in April 2009, up 30
pounds from last April.  The revised March rate was 1,640 pounds per cow.
The average number of milk cows on farms in Minnesota during April 2009 was
468,000 head, unchanged from the March number, but up 5,000 head from one
year ago.

Accumulated Minnesota milk production for the first 4 months of 2009 was
2.97 billion pounds, up 1.2 percent from the same period a year ago.

             APRIL MILK PRODUCTION UP SLIGHTLY IN MAJOR STATES

Milk production during April 2009 totaled 14.9 billion pounds, up slightly
from April 2008 in the 23 major States.  March’s revised production was at
15.2 billion pounds, up 0.1 percent from March 2008. The March revision
represented an increase of 47 million pounds from last month’s preliminary
estimate.  Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,758 pounds
for April, up 1 pound from April 2008.  The number of milk cows in the 23
major States was 8.48 million head, 3,000 head less than April 2008, and
2,000 head less than March 2009.

Accumulated milk production in the 23 major states for the first 4 months
of 2009 was 58.7 billion pounds, down 0.1 percent from the same period a
year ago.
