United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Crop Progress & Condition Report Mississippi Field Office, PO Box 980 Jackson, MS 39205-0980 (601) 965-4575 * (601) 965-5622 FAX * www.nass.usda.gov Cooperating with Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce Released: March 26, 2012 Week Ending: March 25, 2012 Issue CW1312 According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Mississippi, there were 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday, March 25, 2012. Most growers were able to work in the fields on Monday and Tuesday but thunderstorms swept through Mississippi on Wednesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rains. Showers kept many producers from the fields for the rest of the week and the high winds created by the storm caused some winter wheat lodging. Mississippi produces are hoping for drier weather in the next week. Soil moisture was rated 62 percent adequate and 38 percent surplus. Most are waiting on the ground to dry out enough to get in there. Cattle are doing well on ryegrass and summer grass is starting to grow due to the early warm weather we have experienced. Wheat is growing well though some light rust is showing up in the hot humid conditions." --Jimbo Burkhalter, Tallahatchie "Most of the burndown for cotton has been done or underway but the rain has halted all field work for a while." --Brent Gray, Yalobusha "The early spring has pastures 3 weeks ahead of normal growth. Cool season pastures are as good as ever, and most producers are feeding very little hay. Some early season lime and fertilizer applications are going out. Weed control applications will need to go out one month early." --Mike Howell, Lee "Warm weather has caused wheat to develop much faster than usual, making it more ulnerable to cold damage. We are way ahead of schedule this year; I hope we don't get the late freeze that sometimes comes in April." --Ernest Flint, Attala "Rain this past week saturated all soils. Some areas reported receiving 6 inches or more. This has stopped just about all field work. Some urea has been applied to ryegrass." --Lee Taylor, Forrest Mississippi Weather Summary for Week Ending March 25, 2012 -------------------------------------------------------------- : : : : Air Temperature : Precipitation : :------------------------------------------- Division/Station :Max:Min:Avg:Norm:DFN:One : DFN :Rain:Four : : : : : : :Week: :Days:Weeks: -------------------------------------------------------------- 1.
