Early last week, Missouri producers experienced the first frost of the season followed by warm, dry weather which gave farmers 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork to harvest corn and soybeans. State-wide, topsoil moisture rates 1 percent very short, 14 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 88 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Grain movement from farm to elevator rates 10 percent none, 28 percent light, 52 percent moderate and 10 percent heavy, 15 points more than last week in moderate to heavy. OFF-Farm storage availability rates 22 percent short, 75 adequate, and 3 percent surplus. ON-Farm storage availability rates 28 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Fall tillage is 41 percent complete, slightly ahead of normal for this time of year.
Corn harvest is 66 percent complete, over a month behind last year and normal. Corn moisture at harvest averages 15 percent. Ninety percent of the soybean acreage is mature, 10 days behind last year and 11 days behind normal. Harvest increased 22 points from last week to 60 percent complete, 10 days behind normal. Rice harvest is 96 percent complete, 19 days behind last year and 9 days behind normal. Cotton harvest is 84 percent complete, 16 days behind last year but 9 days ahead of normal. Ninety-five percent of the sorghum crop is mature, 15 days behind normal. Sorghum harvest is 56 percent complete, almost three weeks behind last year and 25 days behind normal. Winter wheat is 63 percent planted, 6 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal. Emergence is at 35 percent, over a week behind normal. Winter wheat condition is rated 1 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 3 percent excellent.
Pasture condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 52 percent good and 7 percent excellent. Hay supply is rated 5 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus, 38 percentage points better than last year at this time in the adequate to surplus categories. Stock water supplies are rated 4 percent short, 91 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus, 31 percentage points better than last year in adequate to surplus.
Temperatures ranged from 1 to 8 degrees below average across the State. Rainfall was very light at 0.05 inches for the State. The central district received 0.13 of an inch while the eastern third of the State reported no rain.
