Agricultural Summary

Wet conditions continue to delay planting and tillage progress.  There were 1.0 days suitable for fieldwork with all districts below 2 days suitable. Topsoil moisture supply was 1 percent short, 58 percent adequate, and 41 percent surplus. The northeast, west-central, and central districts were rated over 60 percent in the surplus category. Subsoil moisture supply was 3 percent very short, 13 percent short, 71 percent adequate and 13 percent surplus. Spring tillage was 38 percent, compared to 84 percent last year, and the 5 year average (normal) of 56 percent.    

Field Crops Report

Corn planting was 15 percent complete, 24 days behind last year and 15 days behind normal. Corn emerged was 9 percent complete, 14 days behind last year and 5 days behind normal. Cotton planting was 1 percent complete. Rice planting was 41 percent complete, 21 days behind last year and 5 days behind normal. Rice emerged was 22 percent, 15 days behind last year but the same as normal. Sorghum planting was unchanged from last week at 2 percent complete. Winter wheat headed was 2 percent complete, 27 days behind normal. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.

Pasture & Livestock

Pasture conditions improved from warmer nighttime temperatures to 5 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 53 percent fair, 23 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Supply of hay and other roughages was 27 percent very short, 38 percent short, 34 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus.  Stock water supplies were 3 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus.  

Weather Summary

Temperatures were 5 to 9 degrees below average across the state. Precipitation averaged 1.55 inches statewide. The 4 week average is 6.22 inches with districts ranging from 7.51 inches in the northeast district to 5.33 inches in the northwest district.
