Agricultural Summary

Warm, dry weather allowed for substantial planting and haying progress before weekend rains fell over much of the State. Last week nearly 1.2 million acres of soybeans were planted.  Localized heavy rains caused flash flooding damaging corn and hay.   There were 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply was 3 percent short, 58 percent adequate and 39 percent surplus. The west-central and north-central districts were rated 72 percent and 62 percent surplus, respectively. Subsoil moisture supply was 3 percent short, 76 percent adequate and 21 percent surplus. Spring tillage was 94 percent, 30 days behind last year, but same as the 5 year average (normal).    

Field Crops Report

Corn planting was 98 percent complete, 28 days behind last year but the same as normal. Corn emerged was 90 percent complete, 25 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal. Corn condition was 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.  Some corn and soybeans were replanted.  Soybean planting advance 22 points to 70 percent complete, 25 days behind last year and 5 days behind normal. Soybeans were 49 percent emerged, 21 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal. Soybean condition was 2 very poor, 8 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.  Cotton squaring was 2 percent complete, 12 days behind normal.  Cotton condition was 2 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 67 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Rice was 99 percent emerged.  Rice condition was 4 percent poor, 43 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 20 percent excellent.  Sorghum planting was 75 percent complete, 22 days behind last year and 2 days behind normal. Sorghum condition was 5 percent poor, 55 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Winter wheat turning color increased 25 points to 86 percent complete, 25 days behind last year and 3 days behind normal.  Winter wheat harvested was 6 percent, 24 days behind last year and 14 days behind normal.  Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Alfalfa hay 1st cutting was 70 percent, 27 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal.  Other hay cut was 41 percent, 27 days behind last year, and 9 days behind normal. 

Pasture & Livestock

Pasture conditions were 2 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Supply of hay and other roughages was 6 percent very short, 22 percent short, 69 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus.  Stock water supplies were 73 percent adequate and 27 percent surplus. 

Weather Summary

Temperatures were 1 degree to 4 degrees above average across the state. Precipitation averaged 0.99 of an inch statewide. The north-central district reported 1.89 inches. Jasper County reported 4.12 inches.
