Agricultural Summary

Cool temperatures with widespread rainfall in the southern third of the state and scattered showers across the rest of the state maintained crop conditions.  There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork.  The southeast district had 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply was 12 percent very short, 38 percent short, 49 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus.  Subsoil moisture supply was 7 percent very short, 37 percent short, 55 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus.

Field Crops Report

Corn silked was 79 percent complete, 18 days behind last year and 5 days behind normal (5-year average). Twenty-three percent of corn was in the dough stage, 19 days behind last year and 8 days behind normal. Corn dented was 5 percent complete, 16 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal.  Corn condition was 5 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 42 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.  Soybeans blooming were 38 percent complete, 16 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal. Soybeans setting pods was 5 percent complete, 16 days behind last year and 10 days behind normal.  Soybean condition was 4 percent very poor, 13 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.  Cotton squaring was 84 percent complete, 17 days behind last year and 13 days behind normal. Cotton setting bolls was 41 percent complete, 2 days ahead of last year but 9 days behind normal.  Cotton condition was 5 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Rice headed was 14 percent complete, 10 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal.  Rice condition was 3 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 28 percent excellent.  Sorghum headed was 23 percent complete, 17 days behind last year and 8 days behind normal. Sorghum condition was 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Alfalfa hay 2nd cutting was 93 percent, 21 days behind last year but 8 days ahead of normal.  Alfalfa hay 3rd cutting was 16 percent, 24 days behind last year and 6 days behind normal.   Other hay cut was 94 percent, 27 days behind last year, but 6 days ahead of normal. 

Pasture & Livestock

Pasture conditions were 2 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 43 percent fair, 41 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Supply of hay and other roughages was 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 84 percent adequate and 8 percent surplus.  Stock water supplies were 7 percent short, 91 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. 

Weather Summary

Temperatures were 4 to 7 degrees below average across the state.  Precipitation averaged 1.03 inches statewide. This is the first time the state has averaged over an inch of precipitation since the week ending June 3rd.  The southeast district reported 2.22 inches. Texas County reported 5.14 inches.
