Agricultural Summary

Above average temperatures and little precipitation across the State resulted in declining conditions for all crops.  There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply was 30 percent very short, 43 percent short and 27 percent adequate.  Topsoil rated short and very short increase 16 points for the second week in a row. The north-central and northeast districts are rated 100 percent and 95 short and very short. Subsoil moisture supply was 23 percent very short, 32 percent short, and 45 percent adequate.

Field Crops Report

Ninety-four percent of corn was in the dough stage, 20 days behind last year but same as normal (5-year average). Corn dented was 68 percent complete, 25 days behind last year and 7 days behind normal.  Corn mature was 15 percent, 31 days behind last year and 14 days behind normal. Corn harvested was 1 percent complete compared to 42 percent last year and 13 percent for the 5 year average. Corn condition was 8 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.  Soybeans blooming were 96 percent complete, 13 days behind last year and 2 days behind normal. Soybeans setting pods was 79 percent complete, 11 days behind last year and 4 days behind normal. Soybeans turning color was 3 percent complete, 15 days behind last year and 8 days behind normal.  Soybean condition was 8 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.  Cotton setting bolls was 98 percent complete, 6 days behind last year and 11 days behind normal.  Cotton opening bolls was 3 percent complete, 25 days behind last year and 19 days behind normal.  Cotton condition was 3 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Rice headed was 94 percent complete, 7 days behind last year but 3 days ahead of normal.  Rice condition was 4 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 23 percent excellent.  Sorghum headed was 92 percent complete, 6 days behind last year and 1 day behind normal.  Forty-three percent of sorghum was turning color and beyond, 11 days behind last year and 6 days behind normal. Sorghum mature was 2 percent, 20 days behind last year and 14 days behind normal. Sorghum condition was 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Alfalfa hay 3rd cutting was 84 percent, 4 days ahead of normal.  

Pasture & Livestock

Pasture conditions were 6 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Supply of hay and other roughages was 7 percent short, 82 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus.  Some producers are starting to feed hay.  Stock water supplies were 2 percent very short, 12 percent short, 85 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. 

Weather Summary

Temperatures were 2 degrees to 6 degrees above average across the state.  Precipitation averaged 0.12 of an inch statewide.  The northwest district reported 0.34 of an inch. St. Louis County reported 1.81 inches. The northwest, north-central, and northeast districts received 1.11, 0.85, and 0.66 inches of precipitation in August.
