Soybean Production Forecast Up From A Month Ago, Corn Unchanged

Columbia, MO - “As producers edge closer to the end of harvest, most are pleasantly surprised at the results,” said Gene Danekas, Director. “Both the corn and soybean crops will be some of the largest ever recorded in Missouri.”

Missouri soybean production is forecast at 192 million bushels based on November 1 conditions, up 3 percent from last month and 10 percent above 2007. A State yield average of 38 bushels per acre is expected, up 1 bushel from October and one-half bushel above last year. If realized, this will be the second highest soybean yield and third largest soybean crop on record.

Corn production in Missouri is forecast at 364 million bushels, unchanged from the October forecast but 21 percent below last year’s crop. The projected yield of 140 bushels per acre is also unchanged from a month earlier but 2 bushels per acre below the 142 bushel yield of 2007. If realized, this will be the fourth highest corn yield and fourth largest corn crop on record.

Cotton production in Missouri is forecast at 670,000 bales, unchanged from the October 1 forecast and 12 percent below last year’s production. The forecast yield of 1,048 pounds is unchanged from last month and 80 pounds per acre above last year’s yield. If realized, this would be the second largest cotton yield on record.

Missouri grain sorghum production is forecast at 8.1 million bushels, unchanged from the October forecast but 20 percent below last year. The State yield forecast of 95 bushels per acre is also unchanged from a month earlier but 1 bushel below last year.

Rice production in the State is expected to total record 14.1 million cwt, unchanged from the October forecast but 15 percent more than 2007. A record yield of 7,100 pounds per acre is forecast, the same as expected a month earlier but 200 pounds more than the 2007 yield.

United States Corn and Soybean Production Down Slightly From October

United States soybean production is forecast at 2.92 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the October forecast but up 9 percent from last year. If realized, this will be the fourth largest production on record. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 39.3 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushel from October 1 and down 2.4 bushels from 2007.

Corn production in the U. S. is forecast at 12.0 billion bushels, down slightly from the October forecast and 8 percent below 2007. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 153.8 bushels per acre, down 0.1 bushel from October but 2.7 bushels above last year. If realized, this will be the second highest yield on record, behind 2004, and production will be the second largest, behind last year.

All U. S. cotton production is forecast at 13.5 million 480-pound bales, down 1 percent from last month and down 30 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 837 pounds per harvested acre, down 12 pounds from last month and down 42 pounds from the record high yield in 2007.

Sorghum production in the U. S. is forecast at 465 million bushels, down 1 percent from the October 1 forecast and 8 percent below 2007. Expected area for harvest for grain is forecast at 7.39 million acres, unchanged from last month but up 9 percent from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, the sorghum yield forecast is 63.0 bushels per acre, down 0.9 bushel from October and down 11.2 bushels from last year.

U. S. rice production is forecast at 203 million cwt, down less than 1 percent from the October forecast but up 3 percent from last year. Area for harvest is expected to total 2.92 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but up 6 percent from 2007. As of November 1, the U.S. yield is forecast at 6,959 pounds per acre, down 23 pounds from the October 1 forecast and 226 pounds below the 2007 record yield of 7,185 pounds per acre.
