Weather Summary

Montana received limited precipitation throughout the state during the week ending May 10th. West Glacier received the most weekly accumulated precipitation with 1.20 inches. Highs were mostly in the 60s and 70s, and lows were mostly in the 20s and 30s. Huntley had the weekly high temperature at 76 degrees. Wisdom had the weekly low temperature at 18 degrees. Topsoil moisture adequate and surplus is 96 percent, unchanged from last week, but above last year's 57 percent, and the five-year average of 61 percent. Subsoil moisture adequate and surplus is 83 percent, above last week's 76 percent, last year's 28 percent, and the five-year average of 43 percent. The number of days suitable for field work was 3.4, up from last week's 1.6 days.

The weather outlook for May 18th through May 24th is for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation for both east and west of the continental divide. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the upper 50s to the upper 60s and lows ranging from upper 20s to the mid 40s.

Field Crops Report

Twenty-six percent of farmers have not started their field work yet. Farmers were able to resume fieldwork due to warmer weather, but there are still some wet fields as well as areas covered with snow. Winter wheat conditions improved slightly from last week with 68 percent good to excellent compared to 62 percent last week, 32 percent last year, and a five-year average of 54 percent.

Livestock Report

Spring snow storms that buried most of Carter and Powder River the previous week resulted in over 4,000 deaths of livestock, mostly calves. Powder River County lost about 1,759 cows and calves and 501 lambs and sheep. Carter County lost about 1,620 cows and calves. Range and pasture feed conditions improved from last week with 47 percent good to excellent, compared to 41 percent last week, 25 percent last year, and a five-year average of 39 percent.
