Weather Summary

Precipitation was light in Montana for the week ending May 31st. Livingston had the greatest amount of precipitation with 1.17 inches. Highs around the state were in the 80s and 90s, and lows mostly ranged between the 30s and 40s. Roundup had the high temperature at 92 degrees. Wisdom had the weekly low temperature at 30, considerably warmer than last week's low temperature. Adequate and surplus topsoil moisture is 68 percent, below last week's 83 percent and last year's 81 percent. The five-year average is 75 percent. Adequate and surplus subsoil moisture is 73 percent, just below last week's 74, but above last year's 56 percent and the five-year average of 52 percent. The number of days suitable for field work was 6.6 days, greater than last year's 3.4 days.

The weather outlook for June 8th through June 14th is for below normal temperatures east and west of the continental divide. Near normal precipitation is expected east of the divide, and above normal precipitation is expected west of the divide. Normal temperatures for the period in Montana are highs in the mid 60s to the upper 70s and lows ranging from the mid 30s to the lower 50s.

Field Crops Report

Small grains are nearly all 90 percent or more planted. However, most small grains are behind last year and the five year average percent emerged, due to delayed planting this spring. Winter wheat is 15 percent in the boot stage.

Livestock Report

Range and pasture feed condition is at 51 percent good to excellent. Seventy-four percent of cattle and calves have been moved to summer ranges, up from last weeks 60 percent. Cattle and sheep receiving supplemental feed decreased from last week and are at 11 and 8 percent, respectively.
