Weather Summary

Areas around the state received light to moderate precipitation for the week ending June 7th. Plevna received the greatest amount of precipitation with 1.97 inches. Temperatures around the state were near normal for this time of year. Culbertson had the high temperature at 88 degrees. Olney and Goldbutte both had the low temperature at 24 degrees. Topsoil moisture is at 78 percent adequate and surplus, above last week's 68 percent but below last year's 86. The five-year average is 78 percent. Adequate and surplus subsoil moisture is 73 percent, same as last week, but above last year's 61 percent and the five-year average of 56 percent. The number of days suitable for field work was 5.3, dropping from last week's 6.6, but above last year's 3.2 and the five year average of 4.2. The weather outlook for June 15th through June 21st is calling for below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation east and west of the continental divide. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the upper 60s to the upper 70s and lows ranging from the mid 30s to the lower 50s.

Field Crops Report

Most crops are in the ground, therefore, we are seeing higher numbers in the emerged, boot, and blooming stages. Winter wheat is 44 percent boot stage, up from last week's 15 percent. The winter wheat crop is 66 percent good and excellent condition. Spring wheat is 96 percent emerged and 4 percent boot stage. Northwest Montana has seen large numbers of grasshoppers hatching in the drier areas.

Livestock Report

Lambing season is wrapping up with 98 percent complete. Ranchers continue to move livestock to summer ranges. Eighty-six percent of cattle and calves and 80 percent of sheep and lambs have been moved.
