Weather Summary

Montana saw high temperatures and low precipitation for the week ending July 5th. Olney had the low at 34 degrees. Miles City had the high temperature at 97 degrees. Sidney received the greatest amount of precipitation with 1.81 inches last week. Topsoil moisture is 40 percent adequate and surplus, just below last week's 41 percent, and last year's 54 percent. Subsoil moisture is 41 percent adequate and surplus, down from last week's 47, and last year's 52 percent. The number of days suitable for field work was 6.4, down slightly from last week's 6.7, but up from last year's 6.3.The weather outlook for July 13th through July 19th is for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation across the state. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s, and lows in the lower 40s to the upper 50s

Field Crops Report

Crops in the southeast part of the state are seeing more damage from grasshoppers. Summer storms have caused minor hail damage to wheat fields in central Montana. Barley, spring wheat, oats, and durum wheat are all behind last year's percent headed for this time of year.

Livestock Report

The state is experiencing a slight decline in range and pasture feed condition quality. Warmer temperatures and little to no precipitation has dropped the good to excellent rating to 52 percent, compared to last week's 62 percent good to excellent.
