Weather Summary


Temperatures were slightly cooler and more moisture was received across the state last week. Thompson Falls had the high temperature at 98 degrees. Cooke City had the low at 30 degrees. Rogers Pass received the greatest amount of precipitation during the week with 2.89 inches. Topsoil moisture is 39 percent adequate and surplus, up from last year's 19 percent. Subsoil moisture is 35 percent adequate and surplus, up from last year's 28 percent. The number of days suitable for field work was 5.5, down from last years 6.6 days. The weather outlook for August 10th through August 16th is for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation east of the divide. West of the divide is looking at near normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the upper 70s to the upper 80s, and lows from 40 to 60.

Field Crops Report

The first cutting of alfalfa and other hay is nearly complete at 98 and 94 percent, respectively. Several crops have progressed into harvest season. Winter wheat harvest is 11 percent complete and crop condition is 56 percent good and excellent.

Livestock Report

Range and pasture feed conditions decreased from 39 percent good and excellent last week to 31 percent this week. Many areas of the state are receiving little moisture and are drying out. The five year average is 38 percent good to excellent.
