Weather Summary

Montana experienced above normal temperatures with little precipitation for the week ending August 30th. Highs were in the 80s and 90s, and lows were mostly in the 30s and 40s. Miles City had the high temperature of 97 degrees, and Wisdom had the low temperature of 29 degrees. Culbertson received the greatest amount of weekly precipitation with 1.04 inches. Topsoil moisture is 59 percent adequate and surplus, down from last week's 72 percent, but above last year's 42 percent and the five-year average of 28 percent. Subsoil moisture is 49 percent adequate and surplus, down from last week's 51 percent, but above last year's 35 percent and the five-year average of 24 percent. The number of days suitable for field work increased to 6.6 days from the previous week's 5.0 days.

For September 7th to the 13th, temperatures east of the continental divide are forecasted to be near normal and precipitation is forecasted to be below normal. Both temperature and precipitation west of the divide are supposed to be near normal. Normal temperatures for this period in the state are highs ranging from the upper 60s to the upper 70s and lows in the lower 30s to the lower 50s.

Field Crops Report

Even with warm temperatures drying out fields, crop maturity across the state is still behind normal. Small grain producers are focusing on finishing winter wheat harvest. Pea and lentil harvest is well underway with durum wheat harvest just beginning in the northeast corner of the state.

Livestock Report

Range and pasture feed conditions have improved from last week with 35 percent good to excellent compared to 32 percent the previous week. Conditions are good for this time of year, even though recent high temperatures and grasshoppers in some areas are causing concerns.
