Weather Summary

Montana experienced above normal temperatures with limited precipitation for the week ending September 20th. Highs were in the 80s to high 90s, and lows were mostly in the 30s and 40s. There were several new record high temperatures for September 16th through the 19th throughout North Central and Southwest Montana. Havre had the high temperature of 99 degrees, and Wisdom had the low temperature for the second consecutive week of 29 degrees. Neihart received the greatest amount of weekly precipitation with 0.56 of an inch. Topsoil moisture is 30 percent adequate and surplus, down from last week's 44 percent, as well as last year's 65 percent and below the five-year average of 41 percent. Subsoil moisture is 31 percent adequate and surplus, down from last week's 44 percent, as well as last year's 47 percent but above the five-year average of 27 percent. The number of days suitable for field work decreased to 6.5 days from the previous week's 6.6 days.

Montana temperatures are forecasted to be above normal, and precipitation is forecasted to be below normal for September 28th to October 4th. Normal temperatures for this period in the state are highs ranging from the upper 50s to the upper 60s and lows in the middle 20s to the lower 40s.

Field Crops Report

Winter wheat seeding is almost fifty percent complete, ahead of last year's progress of 29 percent and the five year average of 41 percent. The warm temperatures allowed durum wheat producers to make good progress last week. Producers are beginning to harvest sugarbeets.
