Montana producers planted 78,000 acres of corn for all purposes in 2008, down from 84,000 acres in 2007. There were 76,000 acres harvested for all purposes in 2008, down from 82,000 acres harvested in 2007. Corn harvested for grain, at 35,000 acres, was 3,000 acres below a year ago. The average yield was 136.0 bushels per acre, 4 bushels lower than last year. Grain production decreased 11 percent from a year ago to 4.76 million bushels. Corn for silage harvested acres, at 41,000 acres, decreased 3,000 acres from last year. Corn silage yield was 22 tons per acre, unchanged from a year ago. The total corn for silage production was 902,000 tons, down 7 percent from a year ago.

Sugar beet producers in Montana planted 31,700 acres in 2008, down 15,800 acres from the previous year. Harvested acreage amounted to 30,700 acres, down 16,300 acres from 2007. Yield increased 2.1 tons per acre from last year to average 26.8 tons per acre. Total production of 823,000 tons, was down 29 percent from the previous year. Fall potato production in Montana totaled 3.47 million cwt, down 6 percent from last year. Producers harvested 10,500 acres, 700 acres fewer than 2007. Potato yields were unchanged from a year ago at 330.0 cwt per acre.

All hay harvested in Montana was down 200,000 acres from last year, to 2.40 million acres. All hay production was 4.08 million tons, down 20 percent from a year ago. Alfalfa hay harvested acreage was 1.60 million, down 6 percent from last season. The average yield was 1.90 tons per acre, which is 0.30 ton per acre lower than the previous year. Alfalfa hay production was 3.04 million tons, down 19 percent from last year. Other hay harvested was 800,000 acres, down 11 percent from 2007. The average yield was 1.30 tons per acre, down 0.20 ton per acre from last year. Other hay production was 1.04 million tons, down 23 percent from last year. Montana hay stocks were estimated at 3.83 million tons on December 1, down 15 percent from last year.

U.S. corn for grain production is estimated at 12.1 billion bushels, up 1 percent from the November forecast but 7 percent lower than last year's record high. The average U.S. grain yield is estimated at 153.9 bushels per acre, up 0.1 bushel from the November forecast and 3.2 bushels above 2007. Yield is the second highest on record, behind 2004, and production is the second largest, behind last year.Corn planted area, at 86.0 million acres, is down 8 percent from last year. Planted acreage decreased in most States as a result of favorable prices for other crops, high fertilizer prices, and a return to normal crop rotation patterns. Area harvested for grain, at 78.6 million acres, is down 9 percent from 2007.

Corn silage production is estimated at 112 million tons in 2008, up 5 percent from 2007. The U.S. silage yield is estimated at 18.7 tons per acre, up 1.2 tons from last year while area harvested for silage, at 5.97 million acres, is down 2 percent from a year ago.

Sugar beets production in the United States for 2008 is estimated at 26.8 million tons, 5 percent below the November forecast and 16 percent below the 2007 estimate. Estimated yield, at 26.7 tons per acre, is 1.2 tons higher than last year but 0.1 ton below November. Growers harvested 1.00 million acres, 19 percent below last year. Area planted, at 1.09 million acres, is 14 percent below the 2007 estimate.

U.S. production of fall potatoes for 2008 is estimated at 376 million cwt, up 1 percent from the December forecast but down 7 percent from last year. Area harvested, at 921,100 acres, is virtually unchanged from December but 7 percent lower than last year. The average yield is estimated at 409 cwt per acre, up 3 cwt from December but 1 cwt below last year's record high.

Production of All hay for 2008 in the United States is estimated at 146 million tons, down 3 percent from the October 1 forecast and down 1 percent from the 2007 total. Area harvested, at 60.1 million acres, is down 1 percent from the October forecast and down 2 percent from 2007. The average yield, at 2.43 tons per acre, is down 0.06 ton from October but up 0.02 ton from the previous year.

Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures hay production in 2008 is estimated at 69.6 million tons, down 3 percent from the October 1 forecast and down slightly from 2007. Harvested area, at 21.0 million acres, is 1 percent above the October forecast but 1 percent below the previous year. The average yield is 3.32 tons per acre, 0.12 ton below the previous forecast but 0.01 ton above 2007.

All other hay production in 2008 totaled 76.1 million tons, down 4 percent from the October 1 forecast and down 1 percent from 2007. Area for harvest, at 39.1 million acres, is down 1 percent from October and 2 percent below last year. The average yield is estimated at 1.95 tons per acre, down 0.04 ton from October but up 0.02 ton from last year.

Stocks of all hay stored on farms totaled 104 million tons on December 1, 2008, down less than 1 percent from a year ago. Disappearance of hay from May-December 2008 totaled 63.6 million tons, compared with 57.8 million tons for the same period a year ago.
