Montana's dry bean growers produced 191,000 cwt in 2008, down 31 percent from last year. Producers planted 11,200 acres of beans this year, 7,100 acres below last year. Growers harvested 9,800 acres, which averaged 1,950 lbs per acre, compared with last year's 16,600 acres harvested and the average yield of 1,670 lbs per acre. Pinto bean production in 2008 was 174,000 cwt, which is 9 percent below last year. Planted acreage was 8,600, up 100 acres from last year. Harvested acreage, at 7,200 acres, is 1,200 acres below the previous year. The yield was 2,420 lbs per acre, which is 140 pounds per acre more than last year. All garbanzo bean production, at 17,000 cwt, compares to 86,000 cwt last year. Planted acreage was 2,600, down from 9,800 planted acres last year. Harvested area was 2,600 acres, compared with 8,200 acres last year. The yield was 650 pounds per acre, down from last year's 1,050 pounds per acre. Small garbanzo bean producers planted 900 acres, of which 900 were harvested, with a yield of 1,350 pounds per acre. Total production was 12,000 cwt for 2008. Large garbanzo bean producers planted 1,700 acres and harvested 1,700 acres, with a yield of 320 pounds per acre. Total production of large garbanzo beans was 5,000 cwt.

Dry edible pea production for 2008 in Montana was 2,495,000 cwt, down 32 percent from a year ago, due to lower yields. Dry pea yield for 2008 was 10.8 cwt per acre, compared with 17.0 cwt in 2007. Yields were down due to areas affected by hail damage and drought. Planted and harvested acreage was 245,000 and 231,000 acres, respectively. This is the largest dry edible pea planted and harvested acreage on record. Records began in 1928; however, estimates were discontinued during 1958 to 1997. Last year, growers planted 235,000 acres and harvested 217,000 acres. Austrian winter pea production in 2008 was 29,000 cwt, down from last year's 36,000 cwt. Planted acreage was 10,000 acres, down from 20,000 acres in 2007. Harvested acreage, at 3,000, was 1,000 acres lower than the previous year. The yield was 9.6 cwt per acre in 2008, compared with 9.1 cwt a year ago.

Montana's 2008 lentil production was 608,000 cwt, down 38 percent from a year ago. Planted area was 83,000 acres and harvested acres were 79,000 acres. Last year, the planted and harvested acres were 87,000 and 85,000 acres, respectively. Lentil yield for 2008 was 7.7 cwt per acre, down 3.8 cwt per acre from a year ago.

U.S. dry edible bean production is estimated at 25.6 million cwt for 2008, down 1 percent from the December forecast and slightly below last year. Harvested area is estimated at 1.45 million acres, virtually unchanged from the December forecast but 2 percent below 2007. The average U.S. yield is estimated at a record high 1,768 pounds per acre, a decrease of 6 pounds from the last forecast but 38 pounds higher than last year. Production increased from a year ago for large lima, navy, great northern, light red kidney, dark red kidney, small red, and cranberry beans.

U.S. production of dry edible peas is estimated at 12.3 million cwt, down 25 percent from the 2007 estimate. Area for harvest, at 847,300 acres, is 4 percent above a year ago. Average yield is estimated at 1,448 pounds per acre, down 560 pounds from last season.

Austrian winter pea production for the 2008 season is estimated at 104,000 cwt, down 6 percent from the November 1 forecast and 12 percent below 2007. Area harvested, at 8,000 acres, is 20 percent below last season. Average yield, at 1,300 pounds per acre, increased 120 pounds from 2007.

U.S. lentil production is forecast at 2.41 million cwt, down 34 percent from last year. Area for harvest is forecast at 263,000 acres, down 11 percent from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 917 pounds per acre, down 320 pounds per acre from 2007.
