All wheat production in Montana, at 177.0 million bushels, is up 7 percent from the 2008 crop of 164.7 million bushels. Montana's 2009 winter wheat production was 89.5 million bushels, 5 percent below last year's production. Producers seeded 2.55 million acres of winter wheat, down 2 percent from 2008. Producers harvested 2.42 million acres, unchanged from the previous year. The 2009 winter wheat average yield, at 37.0 bushels per acre, is unchanged from the August forecast, but 2 bushels below last year.

Spring wheat production in Montana was 70.5 million bushels, up 18 percent from 2008 due to higher yields. The acreage seeded was 2.40 million acres, down 150,000 acres from last year's acreage of 2.55 million. Producers harvested 2.35 million acres, down 130,000 acres from the previous year. The average yield was 30.0 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from the August forecast and up 6 bushels from the previous year.

Montana durum wheat growers seeded 570,000 acres, down 20,000 acres from last year. Producers harvested 565,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from 2008. The average yield was 30.0 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from the August forecast and up 11 bushels from the previous year. Total production for 2009 was estimated at 17.0 million bushels, up 57 percent from last year's 10.8 million bushels.

In 2009, Montana producers seeded 870,000 acres of barley, up 10,000 acres from 2008. Producers harvested 720,000 acres for grain, down 20,000 acres from last year. The average yield for 2009 is 56.0 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from the August forecast and up 5 bushels from last year. Production was estimated at 40.3 million bushels, up 7 percent from last year.

Oat production in Montana was 1.8 million bushels, up 17 percent from last year. Planted acreage was 70,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from 2008. Acreage harvested for grain was 32,000 acres, up 2,000 acres from last year. Average yield, at 56.0 bushels per acre, was up 5 bushels from the previous forecast and 5 bushels above 2008.

All wheat production in the United States totaled 2.22 billion bushels in 2009, up 2 percent from the August forecast but down 11 percent from 2008. Grain area is 50.1 million acres, down 10 percent from last year. The U.S. yield is 44.4 bushels per acre, down 0.5 bushel from last year.

The 2009 U.S. winter wheat production totaled 1.52 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the August forecast and 18 percent below last year. The U.S. yield is 44.2 bushels per acre, unchanged from the August forecast but down 2.9 bushels from the previous year. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 34.5 million acres, down 1 percent from the last forecast and down 13 percent from the previous year. Hard Red Winter production totaled 919 million bushels, down 11 percent from 2008. Soft Red Winter production is 404 million bushels, down 34 percent from last year when 614 million bushels were produced. White Winter production is 200 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year.

U.S. other spring wheat production for 2009 is estimated at 587 million bushels, up 7 percent from the August forecast and 2008. Harvested area is 13.1 million acres, 1 percent below the August forecast and down 3 percent from last year. The U.S. yield is a record high 45.0 bushels per acre, 4.5 bushels higher than last year and 1.8 bushels higher than the previous record set in 2004. Yields are above last year's level in all States except Minnesota, South Dakota, and Utah. North Dakota's yield of 45.5 bushels per acre is also a record high, 3.5 bushels higher than the previous record set in 1992.

U.S. durum wheat production for 2009 is estimated at 110 million bushels, up 12 percent from the August forecast and 31 percent higher than 2008. Grain area harvested is 2.52 million acres, up 3 percent from August but down 2 percent from the previous year. The U.S. yield is a record high 43.7 bushels per acre, 11.1 bushels higher than last year and 4.0 bushels higher than the previous record set in 1992. Yields are above last year's level in all States except California. North Dakota's yield of 38.0 bushels per acre ties a record high set in 1992.

Barley production in the United States is estimated at 227 million bushels, 10 percent above the August forecast but 5 percent below 2008. Average yield per acre, at 72.8 bushels, is up 7.0 bushels from August and 9.2 bushels from last year and is the highest yield on record since estimates began in 1866. Producers seeded 3.57 million acres for 2009, down 2 percent from June and down 16 percent from last year. This is the second lowest planted acreage on record. Harvested area, at 3.12 million acres, is down slightly from August and 17 percent from 2008.

The 2009 U.S. oats production is estimated at 93.3 million bushels, up 5 percent from last year's record low production. A record high yield is estimated at 67.6 bushels per acre, up 3.9 bushels from the previous year. Area planted to oats is estimated at 3.40 million acres, up 5 percent from the record low set in 2008. This is the second lowest planted acreage on record. Harvested area is estimated at a record low 1.38 million acres, 2 percent below last year.
