Wheat Movement

Montana wheat shipped to out-of-state destinations during January 2009 through June 2009 was 56.3 million bushels, which is slightly less than the previous year.

Ninety-three percent of wheat shipped during this period headed west, totaling 52.5 million bushels, compared to 51.9 million bushels the previous year. Movements to eastern destinations during this period totaled 2.4 million bushels, slightly less than a year ago. Other and unknown destination shipments totaled 1.4 million bushels, down from 2.0 million bushels a year ago.

Wheat shipped by rail amounted to 54.7 million bushels, 97% of total shipments. Wheat trucked during this period was 1.6 million bushels compared with 1.7 million bushels last year. The percentage of wheat shipped by truck was 3% of the total, which is unchanged from the previous year.

Barley Movement

Montana barley shipped to out-of-state destinations during the January 2009 to June 2009 period was 3.7 million bushels, down 20% from the same period last year.

Shipments of barley out of Montana headed for western destinations were 0.9 million bushels, compared to 2.0 million bushels for the same period last year. Shipments to eastern destinations increased from 1.3 million bushels last year to 1.5 million bushels this year. Shipments to other destinations remained virtually unchanged from last year at 1.3 million bushels.

Barley shipped by rail amounted to 3.2 million bushels, down from the 4.4 million bushels shipped last year. Barley hauled by rail was 86% of total movement, compared with 96% last year.
