| Stocks of all wheat in Montana on December 1, 2008 were
113.4 million bushels, up 21 percent from December 1, 2007. All wheat
stocks stored on the farm amounted to 92.0 million bushels, up 30 percent
from a year ago. All wheat stored off farm was down 7 percent from the
previous year to 21.4 million bushels. All wheat disappearance for the
September - November 2008 quarter was down 26 percent from the same quarter
last year to 39.4 million bushels, compared with 53.3 million bushels
a year ago.
Barley stocks in all positions on December 1, 2008 were 27.7 million bushels, up 15 percent from a year ago. Barley stored on farms was 17.0 million bushels, up 21 percent from last year. Off-farm barley storage was up 5 percent from a year ago to 10.7 million bushels. All barley disappearance for the September - November 2008 quarter was 10.7 million bushels, down 9 percent from 11.8 million bushels a year ago. Oat stocks in all positions were 1.35 million bushels, down 19 percent from last year. On-farm oat stocks were 1.3 million bushels, down 19 percent from a year ago. Oats stored off farm were down 33 percent from last year to 50,000 bushels. The on-farm storage capacity of all storage facilities in Montana, normally used for storing grain, was 340 million bushels, down 1 percent from a year ago. There were 166 off-farm storage facilities in Montana on December 1, 2008, compared to 175 on December 1, 2007. The storage capacity of off-farm facilities was 71.6 million bushels, 3 percent below a year ago. For the U.S., all wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2008 totaled 1.42 billion bushels, up 26 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 454 million bushels, up 57 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, at 968 million bushels, are up 15 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2008 indicated disappearance is 436 million bushels, down 25 percent from the same period a year earlier. Durum wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2008 totaled 44.7 million bushels, up 12 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 26.1 million bushels, are up 48 percent from December 1, 2007. Off-farm stocks totaled 18.6 million bushels, down 16 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2008 indicated disappearance of 14.1 million bushels is down 54 percent from the same period a year earlier. Barley stored in all positions on December 1, 2008 totaled 173 million bushels, up 27 percent from December 1, 2007. On-farm stocks are estimated at 77.1 million bushels, 24 percent above a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 95.8 million bushels, are 30 percent above December 2007. The September - November 2008 indicated disappearance is 35.9 million bushels, 32 percent below the same period a year earlier. Oats stored in all positions on December 1, 2008 totaled 115 million bushels, 22 percent above the stocks on December 1, 2007. Of the total stocks on hand, 42.6 million bushels are stored on farms, down 1 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 72.3 million bushels, up 41 percent from the previous year. Indicated disappearance during September - November 2008 totaled 4.22 million bushels. Corn stored in all positions on December 1, 2008 totaled 10.1 billion bushels, down 2 percent from December 1, 2007. Of the total stocks, 6.48 billion bushels are stored on farms, down 1 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 3.60 billion bushels, are down 4 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2008 indicated disappearance is 3.64 billion bushels, compared with 4.06 billion bushels during the same period last year. The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 12.0 billion bushels on December 1, 2008, up 2 percent from December 1, 2007. Iowa continues to lead all States with 1.95 billion bushels of on-farm storage capacity followed by Illinois with 1.37 billion bushels and Minnesota with 1.30 billion bushels. Other major States include Nebraska with 1.05 billion bushels and Indiana with 770 million bushels of on-farm storage capacity. These five States account for 54 percent of the Nation's on-farm storage capacity. On-farm grain storage capacity includes all bins, cribs, sheds, and other structures located on farms that are normally used to store whole grains, oilseeds, or pulse crops. Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage in the United States totaled 9.35 billion bushels on December 1, 2008, up 3 percent from December 1, 2007.
