Beaverhead County, Montana

Located in the extreme southwestern corner of
Montana, Beaverhead County abounds in spots of
historical interest. When Lewis and Clark traversed
the county, they named Beaverhead Rock from
which the county gets its name. The ghost town
of Bannack was the scene of the state's first great
gold discoveries and was Montana's first territorial
capital. The Big Hole Battlefield National Mon-
ument, commemorating the Battle of the Big Hole,
is located in the northwestern corner of the county
near Wisdom. The county is bordered on three
sides by the Continental Divide and is made up of
several broad, rich valleys. The greater portion of
the Beaverhead National Forest lies within the
borders of the county, and it is a popular hunting
and fishing area. The county was established in
February 1865 and the county seat is Dillon.
