Chouteau County, Montana

Chouteau County derives its name from a
Frenchman by the name of Pierre Chouteau who
was President of the American Fur Company
headquartered at Fort Benton. The landscape in
Chouteau County is characterized by gently
rolling plain, divided into benches by the
Missouri, Marias, and Teton Rivers. The
Missouri River traverses the county from west
to east, and the Marias and Teton Rivers join
the Missouri near Loma. A northeastern portion
of the county is occupied by the Bear Paw
Mountains, while the Highwood Mountains and a
section of the Lewis and Clark National Forest
cover a small area in the south.
