Agriculture Remains Montana’s Number One Industry in 2007

A comparison of selected Montana industries shows Agriculture outpaced other industry sectors by $418 million. With higher grain prices, the value of crop production for 2007 increased to $1.3 billion, an increase of $378 million or 42 percent over 2006. The value of livestock increased in 2007 to $1.4 billion, a increase of $92 million from 2006. Government payments decreased 45 percent in 2006 to $38.4 million, down $46.4 million from 2006.

When comparing major industrial sectors in Montana, most sectors' receipts increased. Receipts for Mining showed the largest percentage increase, up 22 percent or $289 million above 2006. Agriculture showed the next largest percentage increase, at 17 percent, up $494 million from 2006. Gas and oil receipts were up $262 million from 2006 or 10 percent. Non-residential Travel showed the smallest increase in 2007, at 4 percent, up $128 million from 2006. Wood and Paper Products decreased 8 percent or $90 million below 2006.
