GRAIN STORAGE CAPACITY There were 531 commercially licensed off-farm grain storage facilities in Nebraska as of December 1, 1999. Storage capacity for these facilities totaled 660.8 million bushels up 5% from a year ago. On-farm storage capacity in Nebraska is estimated at 1.03 billion bushels, down 2% from last year. In the United States, off-farm grain storage facilities totaled 9,995 on December 1, 1999, 277 fewer than on December 1, 1998. Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage totaled 8.09 billion bushels in the U.S., up 1% from December 1, 1998. Twenty-three States and New England showed increases from last year, 14 States recorded decreases in capacity and three were unchanged. The U.S. on-farm grain storage capacity totaled 11.2 billion bushels on December 1, 1999, up slightly from December 1, 1998. WINTER WHEAT SEEDINGS Nebraska's winter wheat seedings for the 2000 crop totaled 1.85 million acres, down 7% from last year and the lowest of record dating back to 1909. Seeding of the crop began near the first of September and by mid-month proceeded ahead of normal for the remainder of the planting season. Dry soils during the fall months slowed emergence and caused stands to be uneven in Southeastern counties. Snowfall in the west during the first few days of the New Year provided some moisture. The crop condition rating at the end of December showed 66% of the crop in good or excellent condition, below 77% last year. In the United States, winter wheat seeded area for the 2000 crop is expected to total 42.9 million acres, down 1% from 1999. This is the smallest area since 1972. Class breakdowns approximate: Hard Red Winter, 30.3 million; Soft Red Winter, 9.2 million; White Winter, 3.4 million.
