This inventory was up 7% from last year and 9% above March 1, 1998. Placements during February totaled 390,000 head, down 5% from last year but 18% above February two years ago. Fed cattle marketings for the month of February totaled 440,000 head, up 13% from last year and 26% above two years ago. Other disappearance during February totaled 10,000 head, compared with 10,000 head during February 1999 and 10,000 head during February 1998. HISTORIC 7 STATES UP 9% Cattle on feed March 1, 2000, in the historic seven States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.70 million, up 9% from the previous year and 10% above March 1, 1998. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.61 million, 3% above 1999 and 24% above 1998. Marketings during February totaled 1.75 million, 12% above 1999 and 11% above 1998. Other disappearance during February was 47,000 head, 12% above 1999 but 16% below 1998. U.S. UP 9% FROM A YEAR AGO Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.33 million head on March 1, 2000. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.88 million. Net placements were 1.80 million. During February, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 351,000, 600-699 pounds were 476,000, 700-799 pounds were 596,000 and 800 pounds and greater were 457,000. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 2.05 million. Other disappearance totaled 78,000 during February. FALL POTATO STOCKS Potato stocks on the first of March in the 15 Major Potato States totaled 170 million cwt., down 2 percent from a year ago and 3 percent below two years ago. Disappearance of 251 million cwt., was slightly above last year and 5 percent above two years ago. Shrink and loss of 25.7 million cwt. was up 1 percent from last year and 20 percent above two years ago. Processing of 1999 crop potatoes totaled 126 million cwt, down 2 percent from the 1998 crop but 6 above the 1997 crop. FEBRUARY MILK PRODUCTION Milk production in the 20 major States during February totaled 11.7 billion pounds, up 8.2 perrcent from production in these same States in February 1999. January revised production, at 12.3 billion pounds, was 4.9% above January 1999. Production per cow in the 20 major States averaged 1,505 pounds for February, 101 pounds above February 1999. The number of cows on farms in the 20 major States was 7.77 million head, 72,000 head more than February 1999 and 3,000 head more than January 2000. Storage capacity for these facilities totaled 660.8 million bushels compared to 628.6 million bushels last year. On-farm storage capacity in Nebraska is estimated at 1.03 billion bushels, down 2% from last year.
