This inventory was up 6% from last year and 12% above April 1, 1998. Fed cattle marketings for the month of March totaled 390,000 head, up 11% from last year and 15% above March two years ago. Placements during March totaled 400,000 head, up 5% from last year and 38% above two years ago. Other disappearance during March totaled 10,000 head compared with 10,000 head during March 1999 and 10,000 head during March 1998. HISTORIC 7 STATES UP 8% Cattle on feed April 1, 2000, in the historic 7 Monthly States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.57 million, up 8% from 1999 and 11% above 1998. Placements in feedlots during March totaled 1.72 million, 1% below 1999 but 21% above 1998. Marketings during March totaled 1.76 million, 6% above 1999 and 12% above 1998. Other disappearance during March was 74,000 head, 42% above 1999 and 7% above 1998. U.S. CATTLE ON FEED UP 8% Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.19 million head on April 1, 2000. The inventory was 8% above April 1, 1999. Placements in feedlots during March totaled 2.02 million. Net placements were 1.92 million. During March, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 331,000, 600-699 pounds were 406,000, 700-799 pounds were 715,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 564,000. Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 2.05 million. Other disappearance totaled 101,000 during March. FALL POTATO STOCKS Potato stocks totaled 128 million cwt. on April 1, 2000 down 3% from a year earlier and 5% below two years ago. Storage accounted for 30% of 1999 fall production, 1% less than a year ago. Disappearance was 293 million cwt., up slightly from last year and 5% above two years ago. Processing accounted for 146 million cwt, down 2% from the 1998 crop but 6% above the 1997 crop. Seasonal shrink and loss to date is estimated at 27.9 million cwt. up 2% from last year and 10% above two years ago. U.S. COLD STORAGE HIGHLIGHTS Frozen food stocks in refrigerated warehouses on March 31, 2000, were greater than the year earlier levels for fruit, chicken, and potatoes. Total red meat supplies in freezers increased 5% from February 2000, but were 3% below March 1999. Frozen pork stocks were 4% above last month, but were 9% below last year. Total frozen poultry supplies were up 6% from last month and were 4% above last year's level.
