Loos, State Statistician ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Issue 13/2000 Released: 7/03/2000 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MID-YEAR ACREAGE HIGHLIGHTS Based on June 1 surveys, Nebraska producers planted a record high number of soybean acres but less corn than in 1999. In addition, more acres of sugar beets were being grown in 2000 than a year ago, while sunflower, alfalfa, oats, dry edible beans, millet, and wheat were lower. Sorghum acreage was unchanged from a year earlier. As of June 1, planting of corn was complete and planting of soybeans and sorghum were two to three weeks ahead of average. Corn acreage planted, at 8.4 million acres, is down 2% from last year and 5% below 1998. A forecasted 8.05 million acres will be harvested as grain, a decline of 3% from 1999. Sorghum producers planted 550,000 acres, unchanged from last year which was the lowest total since 1953 when 399,000 acres were grown. Acreage intended for harvest as grain, at 470,000 acres, is equal to a year ago. Soybean producers planted a record 4.7 million acres, 400,000 acres above last year and 9% above the previous record high set in 1999. This is the fourth year in a row of increasing soybean acres. Acres forecast for harvest at 4.65 million would be a record and 9% above last year. Winter wheat planted acreage is left unchanged from the March estimate of 1.85 million acres, 7% below 1999. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 1.75 million, 3% less than last year's crop. Oats acreage planted, at 130,000 acres, is down 4% from last year. Oats acreage intended for harvest as grain, at 70,000 acres, is down 7% from last year. Barley planted, at 10,000 acres, is up 5,000 from last year's crop. Acreage for harvest, at 6,000, is double the 1999 level. Millet acreage, at 140,000 acres, was off 22% from a year earlier. All hay acreage for harvest, at 3.1 million acres, is down 3% from 1999, while dry edible beans were planted on 170,000 acres, 19% below last year. Sugar beet plantings, at 78,600 acres, are up 8% from 1999. Sunflowers were planted on 95,000 acres, down 6% from last year. Lower prices for lettuce, corn, cattle, soybeans, and broccoli more than offset price increases for eggs, strawberries, milk, and celery. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell affects the overall index. Higher seasonal marketings of wheat, grapes, hay, and cantaloupes more than offset the relatively lower marketings of oranges, tomatoes, strawberries, and cattle. These marketing changes kept the index from falling one more point. Compared with June 1999, the All Farm Products Index was 2 points (2.1%) higher. Price increases from June 1999 for hogs, cattle, lettuce, and soybeans more than offset price decreases for milk, oranges, corn and broilers.
