Special recognition and appreciation are extended to all producers and agri- businesses who provided data making these reports possible. On a personal note, I am proud to have assumed the position of State Statistician for this office effective December 31, 2000. This follows five years as State Statistician of the South Dakota statistics office, tours of duty in our Washington D.C. headquarters and as Deputy State Statistician of the North Dakota office. My roots are in a central South Dakota (Highmore) grain and cattle operation. I am a graduate of South Dakota State University in Brookings. My goals as new State Statistician will be to continue providing timely, accurate and relevant Nebraska agricultural statistics; and to make them available to all who need them for their decision making. In this regard, your assistance and suggestions are respectfully requested. Thanks again to those who report and for the support of all State agriculturists. William G. Seeding of the crop made a limited start by the first of September, but by mid-month the pace had increased to near normal and continued at a normal pace for the remainder of the planting season. Limited soil moisture supplies and dry weather conditions during the planting season delayed seeding activities and slowed emergence. Precipitation in the form of rain and snow, since planting, improved the wheat outlook. The crop condition rating at the end of December showed 38% of the crop in good or excellent condition, below 66% last year. In the United States, winter wheat seeded area for the 2001 crop is expected to total 41.3 million acres, down 5% from 2000. This is the smallest area since 1971. Class breakdowns approximate: Hard Red Winter, 28.9 million; Soft Red Winter, 8.9 million; White Winter, 3.5 million.
