Hamlin State Statistician ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NEBRASKA FARMS AND RANCHES DECLINE The number of farms and ranches in Nebraska in 2000 is estimated at 54,000, down 1,000 from 1999. The last time there was a change in the number of farms and ranches was in 1997. Total land in farms, at 46,400 acres, is unchanged from last year. The average size of farm increased 15 acres from 844 acres in 1999 to 859 acres in 2000. U.S. FARMS AND RANCHES DECLINE IN 2000 The number of arms and ranches in the U.S. in 2000 is estimated at 2.17 million, down 0.9% from 1999. The decline in farms and ranches occurred primarily in agricultural operations with less than $10,000 in sales. This is the largest decline in farms and ranches since 1991 when just over 29,000 operations were lost. Total land in farms, at 943.0 million acres, declined 0.5% or 4.4 million acres from last year. The average size of farm increased 2 acres from 432 acres in 1999 to 434 acres in 2000. Inventory is the number on hand at the end of the year. The United States total show the actual number of feedlots, inventory, and number of animals marketed in each size group. The sum of the numbers shown by States under a specified size group may or may not add to the United States total for that size group since for some States size groups are combined to avoid disclosing individual operations. 2/ Size groups are based on feedlot capacity in number of head. * Lots, inventory, and marketings from other size groups are included to avoid disclosing individual operations. U.S. INDEX OF PRICES RECEIVED The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in February was 99 based on 1990-92=100, up 2 points (2.1 percent) from the January index. Higher prices for lettuce, broilers, oranges, and hogs were partially offset by lower prices for strawberries, soybeans, corn, and tomatoes. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell often affects the overall index. Higher seasonal marketings of milk, cattle, broilers, and strawberries were partially offset by lower marketings of corn, soybeans, tobacco, and cotton.
