Hamlin State Statistician NEBRASKA CATTLE ON FEED UP 2% Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.35 million cattle on feed on April 1. This inventory was up 2% from last year and 8% above April 1, 1999. Placements during March totaled 320,000 head, down 20% from last year and 16% below two years ago. Fed cattle marketings for the month of March totaled 335,000 head, down 14% from last year and 4% below two years ago. Other disappearance during March totaled 15,000 head, compared with 10,000 head during March 2000 and 10,000 head during March 1999. 7 STATES AND U.S. CATTLE ON FEED Cattle on feed April 1, 2001, in the historic seven monthly States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.86 million, up 3% from the previous year and 11% above April 1, 1999. During March, placecments were down 11% and marketings were down 9% from a year ago. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.52 million head on April 1, 2001. During march, placements were down 9% and marketings were down 6% from a year ago. U.S. COLD STORAGE HIGHLIGHTS Frozen food stocks in refrigerated warehouses on March 31, 2001, were greater than the year earlier levels for fruit. Total red meat supplies in freezers were 7% below February 2001 and 15% below March 2000. Frozen pork stocks were 6% below last month and were 18% below last year. Total frozen poultry supplies were down 2% from last month and were 17% below last year's level. FALL POTATO STOCKS Potato stocks totaled a record high 154 million cwt. on April 1, 2000, up 20% from last year and 4% above the previous record set April 1, 1997. Potatoes in storage accounted for 33% of the 2000 fall production, up 2% from a year ago. Disappearance, at a record high 308 million cwt, was up 5% from the last two years and 4% above the previous record set during the 1996 season. Processing accounted for 151 million cwt, up 1% from last year in comparable States. Shrink and loss, to this date, was 35.4 million cwt, up 31% from last year and 32% above two years ago.
