State Statistician MID-YEAR ACREAGE HIGHLIGHTS Based on June 1 surveys, Nebraska producers increased current acreage devoted to soybeans, oats, millet, winter wheat (planted last fall) and hay, while decreasing acreage devoted to corn, sorghum, dry beans, sunflowers and sugar beets. Corn growers planted 8.2 million acres in 2001, the smallest level since 1995, down 3% from last year and 5% below 1999. A forecasted 7.9 million acres will be harvested for grain, a decline of 2% from 2000, also the smallest since 1995. Soybean producers planted a record high 4.9 million acres, 5% over last year. Nebraska soybean producers have nearly doubled the amount of acreage devoted to soybeans since 1992, and increased acreage eight of the last nine years. Acres forecast for harvest, at 4.825 million acres, would also be a record high, and 6% above last year. Last fall, winter wheat was planted on 1.8 million acres, up 3% from a year earlier while down 5% from 1999. Harvested acreage is set at 1.7 million acres, up 3% from 2000. Sorghum growers planted 550,000 acres for all purposes, down 8% from last year and equal to 1999 which was the lowest level since 1953. Harvested acres forecast at 450,000, also the lowest level since 1953, were down 10% from last year and 4% below 1999. Lower prices for cantaloupes, lettuce, sweet corn, and tomatoes were partially offset by higher prices for milk, strawberries, celery, and broilers. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell affects the overall index. Higher seasonal marketings of wheat, grapes, hay, and peaches were offset by lower marketings of strawberries, tomatoes, oranges, and cattle. Compared with June 2000, the All Farm Products Index was 9 points (9.2%) higher. Price increases from June 2000 for milk, broilers, cattle, and wheat were partially offset by lower prices for cantaloupes, corn, soybeans, and eggs.
