Hamlin State Statistician NEBRASKA CATTLE ON FEED DOWN 7% Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 1.95 million cattle on feed on October 1, 2001. This inventory was down 7% from last year but 3% above October 1, 1999. Placements during September totaled 450,000 head, down 20% from last year and 22% below 1999. Fed cattle marketings for the month of September totaled 315,000 head, down 15% from last year and two years ago. Other disappearance during September totaled 5,000 head compared with 10,000 head during September 2000 and 10,000 head during September 1999. U.S. CATTLE ON FEED Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.1 million head on October 1, 2001. The inventory was 1% above October 1, 2000 and 8% above October 1, 1999. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.14 million, 20% below 2000 and 23% below 1999. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.82 million, 9% below 2000 and 7% below 1999. Other disappearance totaled 46,000 during September, 15% below 2000 and 26% below 1999. U.S. COLD STORAGE HIGHLIGHTS Frozen food stocks in refrigerated warehouses on September 30, 2001, were greater than year earlier levels for orange juice, turkeys and potatoes. Total red meat supplies in freezers were 6% above August 2001 but were 11% below September 2000. Total frozen poultry supplies on September 30, 2001, were down 1% from last month and were 13% below last year's level. MONTHLY HOG AND PIGS The September 2001 U.S. pig crop at 8.56 million head, was slightly less than the previous year. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 964 thousand head, 1% below last year. The average pigs per litter for September rose to 8.88, compared to 8.84 last year. The U.S. inventory of sows and gilts on October 1, 2001, was 5.99 million head, 1% below October 1, 2000. U.S. sows and gilts bred during September totaled 1.17 million head, up 1% from September 2000.
