State Statistician ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stocks of Grain and Hay Corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2001, in Nebraska totaled 1.04 billion bushels, up 8 percent from December 1, 2000. Wheat holdings totaled 64 million bushels, down 5 percent from a year ago. Soybean stocks totaled 168 million bushels, up 17 percent from December 1, 2000. Sorghum stocks at 36 million bushels were down 23 percent from 2000. Hay stocks on Nebraska farms totaled 4.8 million tons, up 37 percent from last year. United States corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2001 totaled 8.26 billion bushels, down 3 percent from December 1, 2000. Wheat stored in all positions totaled 1.62 billion bushels, down 10 percent from a year ago. Soybean stocks totaled 2.28 billion bushels, up 2 percent from December 1, 2000. Sorghum stocks totaled 313 million bushels, up 20 percent from a year ago. Hay stocks totaled 110.5 million tons, up 5 percent from December 1, 2000. Grain Storage Capacity There were 519 commercially licensed off-farm grain storage facilities in Nebraska as of December 1, 2001. Storage capacity for these facilities totaled 690.2 million bushels down slightly from a year ago. In the United States, off-farm grain storage facilities totaled 9,695 on December 1, 2001, down 1 percent from December 1, 2000. Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage totaled 8.42 billion bushels, on December 1, 2001, up 1 percent from December 1, 2000. On-farm storage capacity in Nebraska is estimated at 1.02 billion bushels, down 1 percent from last year. The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 11.2 billion bushels on December 1, 2001, down slightly from December 1, 2000. Winter Wheat Seedings Nebraska's winter wheat seedings for the 2002 crop totaled 1.7 million acres, down 3 percent from last year. Seeding was underway by the first of September. Rainfall slowed seeding during the first few weeks but reached a normal pace as the planting season ended. At the end of December, the crop condition rated 66 percent good or excellent, well above the 38 percent last year. Nebraska's Government Payments, 2000 In 2000, Nebraska farmers collected $1.4 billion in government payments. This was 6 percent more than the $1.3 billion in 1999 and 76 percent more than the $797.4 million in 1998.
