State Statistician ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nebraska Cattle on Feed Down 4 Percent Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head contained 2.17 million cattle on feed on May 1, down 4 percent from last year and 3 percent below May 1, 2000. Placements of cattle into feedlots during April totaled 260,000, up 4 percent from 2001 but 19 percent below 2000. Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 380,000 head, up 10 percent from last year but equal to April two years ago. Other disappearance during April totaled 10,000 compared with 5,000 during April 2001and 10,000 during April 2000. U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 2 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.96 million head on May 1, 2002. The inventory was 2 percent below may 1, 2001 but slightly above May 1, 2000. Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.45 million, 6 percent below 2001 and 15 percent below 2000. Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 1.99 million, 10 percent above 2001 and 6 percent above 2000. Other disappearance totaled 83,000 during April, 7 percent below 2001 and 8 percent below 2000. Source: USDA NASS Cattle on Feed, May 17, 2002. 2002 Wheat Production Down 3 Percent from Last Year Based on May 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2002 winter wheat crop is forecast at 57.6 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year's crop. Average yield is forecast at 36 bushels per acre, down 1 bushels from last year's yield and 1.9 bushels below the ten-year average. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.6 million acres, unchanged from last year. This would be 94 percent of the planted acres, up from last year's 91 percent and the ten-year average of 92 percent. As of May 1, topsoil moisture supplies were rated mostly short to very short in the major wheat growing areas. Disease and insect pressure to date was light. May 1 Hay Stocks Up from Last Year May 1 hay stocks of 1.28 million tons, are up 780,000 tons from last year's abnormally low level of 500,000 tons, but 15 percent below hay stocks of two years ago. Cold Storage Frozen food stocks in refrigerated warehouses on April 30, 2002, were greater than year earlier levels for pork, poultry, beef, vegetables, and orange juice. Total red meat supplies in freezers were 3 percent above March 2002 and 29 percent above April 2001. Frozen pork stocks were 6 percent above last month and 31 percent above last year. Total frozen poultry supplies on April 30, 2002, were up 8 percent from last month and were 30 percent above last year's level. Total pounds of turkey in freezers increased 12 percent from last month and 30 percent from last year. April Milk Production Milk production in the 20 major States during April totaled 12.5 billion pounds, up 2.9 percent from production in these same States in April 2001. March revised production, at 12.8 billion pounds, was up 3.1 percent from March 2001. Production per cow in the 20 major States averaged 1,614 pounds for April, 43 pounds above April 2001. The number of milk cows on farms in the 20 major States was 7.75 million head, 12,000 head more than April 2001, and 8,000 head more than March 2002.
