Average yield is forecast at 29 bushels per acre, down 8 bushels from last year's yield, 7 bushels below last month and lowest since the 27 bushel yield recorded in 1989. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.6 million acres, equal to last year which was the lowest since 975 thousand acres were harvested in 1917. As of June 2, topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies were rated mostly short to very short in the major wheat growing areas.
