An estimated 8.05 million acres will be harvested for grain, an increase of 4 percent from 2001. Nebraska soybean producers planted 4.9 million acres, 1 percent below last year's record high but 5 percent above 2000. Last fall, winter wheat was sown on 1.65 million acres, down 6 percent from the past two years. Sorghum growers planted 420,000 acres for all purposes, down 24 percent from last year, 30 percent below 2000, and the lowest level since 1953. Hay acreage for harvest, at 3.3 million acres, is up 2 percent from last year. Oats planted at 175,000 acres are up 13 percent from 2001. Dry edible bean producers planted 190,000 acres, up 19 percent from a year earlier. Sugar beet plantings of 56,400 acres are 16 percent greater than 2001. Source: USDA NASS Acreage June 28, 2002. Grain Stocks Nebraska corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2002, totaled 421 million bushels, down 5 percent from June 1, 2001. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 54 million bushels, down 4 percent from last year's record high. Wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2002 totaled 33.2 million bushels, down 12 percent from a year ago. U.S. corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2002, totaled 3.59 billion bushels, down 8 percent from June 1, 2001. Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 684 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year. All wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2002, totaled 772 million bushels, down 12 percent from a year ago. Source: USDA NASS Agricultural Prices, June 27, 2002. Hogs and Pigs Nebraska inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2002, was 2.90 million head. This was unchanged from June 2001but 2 percent below March 1, 2002. Breeding inventory, at 395,000 head, was up 10 percent from June 1, 2001 and 1 percent above last quarter. Market hog inventory was 1 percent below last year and 2 percent below last quarter. Inventory of all hogs and pigs in the United States was 59.8 million head on June 1, 2002. This was 2 percent above both June 2001 and March 1, 2002. Breeding inventory, at 6.21 million head, was up slightly from June 1, 2001 but down slightly from last quarter. Market inventory was 2 percent above both last year and last quarter. Expectations of private forecasters averaged 103 percent of the previous year with a range of 101.4 percent to 104.0 percent. * Market hogs were up 2 percent from a year earlier. Private forecasters' expectations ranged from 101.5 percent to 104.0 percent with an average of 103 percent. * Breeding herd was up slightly from a year earlier. Expectations of private forecasters ranged from 100.0 percent to 101.7 percent with an average of 101 percent * U.S. March-May pig crop was up 1 percent from a year earlier. Analysts expected the pig crop to be 102 percent of previous year; estimates ranged from 100.6 percent to 103.0 percent. * June-August intentions are up 2 percent from actual farrowings a year earlier. September-November intentions are up 1 percent from the previous years actual farrowings. * Commercial hog slaughter during March-May at 24.7 million head was 3 percent above a year earlier. Live hog imports were 1.48 million head, up 15 percent from a year earlier. Total exports increased to 39,000 head, compared to 4,000 a year ago.
