Crop Summary Based on September 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2002 corn crop is forecast at 904 million bushels, 21 percent below 2001 and the lowest production since 1995. Acreage to be harvested for grain remained at 7.6 million, down 2 percent from last year. Average yield is forecast at 119 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from August and lowest since 1995. Irrigated corn is forecast to yield 157 bushels per acre, down 16 bushels from last year's record high. Dryland corn yield is forecast at 57 bushels per acre, the lowest since 1980. Soybean production in Nebraska is forecast at 169 million bushels, 24 percent below last year. Acres for harvest, at 4.7 million, were lowered 80,000 from last month but still are second highest on record. Yield is forecast at 36 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but down 9.5 bushels from 2001 and the lowest since 1995. Sorghum yield is forecast at 50 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from last month but down 34 bushels from last year and lowest since 1974. Sugar beet production of 848 thousand tons is up 1 percent from 2001.
